Who We Are

Captain John Wolfe and Claudia Crook started The Wilmington Sailing Company to share their love of sailing with the world. John has been a licensed and professional merchant mariner for nearly a decade; his ocean voyaging has taken him from the foggy coast of Maine to the dusty border of Mexico, to the clear waters of the Caribbean and many places in between. Claudia is a writer and educator who hails from Tennessee originally (Go Vols!) and moved to the coast to get her masters in Creative Writing. Both share a love for music, literature, and good food, and of course for each other.

S/V Maia is a 30′ 1963 Allied Seawind Ketch. A renowned Thomas Gillmer design, the Seawind holds the distinction of being the first fiberglass sailboat to circumnavigate the globe (hull #11, S/V Apogee, accomplished this feat the same year Maia was built). Strong, safe, fast, and comfortable, Maia’s midcentury style and design sets her apart from other yachts.

Sailing has always been a clean and carbon-neutral form of transport. We are committed to being green with an extremely efficient Yanmar diesel for auxiliary power, and a solar panel which provides for all the yacht’s electrical needs.

We believe businesses should do more than just make money. We pledge to donate $10 from each charter booking to the Glioblastoma Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization that seeks to transform the standard of care for this particularly nasty form of brain cancer, to honor the legacy of Charles F. “Chuck” Wolfe, CDR USNR(Ret.), who is largely responsible for Capt. John’s love of the water and the great outdoors.
